Primary school

PRIMARY SCHOOL

At this age, children are enthusiastic about learning. They adore fun techniques, colours and themes that they can relate to. I find that they engage well in lessons that allow them to roam around their environment to discover new things to make art with (like finding textures for crayon rubbing), stamping, painting, and hand building. I also like to let them recreate artist works using age-appropriate methods.

Just because they are young, doesn't mean they can't do it. Sometimes you just need to adjust the learning expectations, and you will be surprised by what they can achieve. In fact, I enjoy looking at their observational drawings the most because they always have fun unique addition in their works. With proper guidance and encouragement, they will enjoy the process, and understand the importance of reconnecting with their surrounding.

Social skill is one of the aspects that I try to incorporate into my art lessons. It is an important opportunity to let children work together as a team, and give them responsibility to segregate tasks (for eg. you are in charge of this part, I am in charge of this colour, etc).

I try to expose students to the different products that art can evolve into. In the example below, they learnt about abstract painting using mixed media, and paper engineering to create the paper folds that open into a book. Technical lessons such as this are usually more suited for older children.
